Okay. SPOILER HEAVY.
This is what Megzie thinks of El Manana.
OKAY. NOODLE ISN'T DEAD. CHILL OUT.
Why would they kill off Noodle, people? Seriously. This is a PROMOTIONAL MUSIC VIDEO. It doesn't depict what is actually happening to the actual band members. Even if the band in question is well... animated.
El Manana can be interperated many different ways. I know a lot of people didn't like El Manana, but I loved it because I found it to be such a versitile song. Disagree if you want. I don't claim to be an expert on music. Quite the contrary.
From what I gather, the windmill/floating island is supposed to be a symbol of freedom and it got shot down. Symbolic? I'd say so. What of? My guess is loss of innocence. Noodle is the youngest member of the band. She's growing up. Think about it. The windmill could very well represent the sactuary of childhood and the choppers could represent the harsh shock of learning the cruelty of this world in growing up. If you think of grwoing up/loss of innocence as dying, it works. So yes, to take a line from an old Gary Puckett song "The child had died, a woman had been born."
I believe El Manana was supposed to be a continuation of Feel Good Inc, which is also a very symbolic video. Overanalyzing? Maybe. But that's what I think.
I really enjoyed the video. The animation was lovely. Yes, it was sad. It was supposed to be. I think it says a lot for Jamie Hewlett and co. that they can make such a sad, dark peice as well as the made some of their happier peices like DARE or Dirty Harry.
To be honest, the only thing I was dissapointed about was the lack of the other three band members completely, but it worked well, so I'm not complaining.
Now, they've said this was their last single. Well, I dont think it is. I can't see them leaving Phase 2 like this, especially since it seems like a new album and 'Phase 3' won't be for a while.
My guess is another promo video or single or both. I'd personally love to see a double Don't Get Lost in Heaven/Demon Days video. I think that would be gorgeous. Remember that Jamie Hewlett was heavily inspired by Hayao Miyazaki (aka God). One of the things that Miyazaki says about film is how he greatly dislikes how so many films made for children show the wordl through a rose coloured lense and that's not how the real world is. But in all of his movies, there remains the consistant message that just because the world isn't all flowers and sunshine (IN A BAG. DURRHURR.) that doesn't mean it's a bad place. If you think of El Manana as an emotional lowlight of Phase 2, then a DGLIH/DD video could be used to show that the world isn't a bad place. The world is what you make it. Which is what Miyazaki tries to convey.
Again, it's a waiting game. We're at the mercy of Jamie and Damon and what they want to do now. We'll just wait and see.
THE POINT IS NOODLE. IS. NOT. DEAD.
SO THERE.
EDIT: Okay, so I did some more thinking about it. Here's what else I came up with.
Okay, so let's just assume that the windmill/floating island represents the sactuary or childhood, k? And it got shot down, right?
Okay, think of it this way. Yes, the windmill was a santuary, but it was an isolated sanctuary. She couldn't go anywhere except where that island would take her.
When you're a child, you're protected, but you have no freedom. Everything you do is decided for you. Some may call childhood, or in this case Noodle's windmill, a very pleasent prison.
The choppers represent growing up/pubery. They shoot down her windmill and it crashes to the ground. She 'dies'. That is to say, the child dies. No one could have psyically survived an explosion like that, just like no child can go through an experience as traumatic as puberty without psychologically dying. The event of Noodle's windmill being shot down represents loss of innocence.
Now, lets say for the sake of argument that after the video, Noodle is psyically reborn as a woman, just as we as people are psychologically reborn as adults after puberty. Noodle's windmill, her sanctuary, is destroyed. But at the same time, the windmill, her prison is also gone. She's on the ground now, free to go wherever she pleases. In essence, she is free.
Yeah, I'm really overanalyzing this.
... in other news. I NOW HAVE A BLAVALLI!!

Her name's Mila! INNIT SHE CUTE?? Thank-you ~Mekou!
EDIT 2: Okay people. Here's why Noodle's not dead.
I'll be the first to admit I dont know much about how the music industry works, but why kill off Noodle? Why get rid of one of the most beloved characters? No one does something to HINDER their success, which is what killing off Noodle would do. Let's face it, if Noodle wasn't there, a part of Gorillaz would be missing. No one wants to see only part of the whole. They've got that huge world tour coming up in a few years. You KNOW they would lose business if the got rid of her.
I think this is a publicity stunt and a damn good one at that. What a better way to get people's attention than to make people think one of the most beloved characters is dead? You notice how no one is rushing to confirm or deny her death? They know exactly what they're doing. They're leaving us hanging to keep the fandom alive. I also think they planned this from the start. Blow them away with Feel Good Inc. Make them love Noodle with DARE. Give them a break with Dirty Harry. Make them think she's dead in El Manana. Leave them hanging. Oh, and let El Manana come out roughly a year after Feel Good Inc." Or at least that's how I see it.
Also, as =WayTooAddicted pointed out, the first shot of the video where she opens her eyes could very well be from the END of the video. I think that's very possible. She's shot down, she 'dies', the sun comes out, she wakes up reborn as an adult, the tommorrow, El Manana.
I could be wrong, btu until someone official says "Yup. She's dead." I'm not going to believe it.

It had a dream-like quality to the whole thing. I think they are just getting deeper with the videos and some people haven't got used to it.
