The Avatar Persona Contest

HAY GUYS.

So, those of you who watch Avatar will already know this but the mid-season episode has aired and gone, so in an attempt to prevent the impending AWS, I am running an Avatar art contest! YAAAY!

*ahem*

Anyways. Yes. The theme of the contest is to draw your Avatar persona. So draw yourself as if you were someone in the avatar universe.

Here's mine, as an example



She's a waterbender from Northern Tribe!!

So, yeah! That's it! Just draw yourself!! Only... Avatar style!! A few rules/guidlines.

This is a contest to draw your Avatar persona, not your Avatar fancharacter.
Yes, there is a difference. A persona is an incarntaion of yourself, a character is well... a character you create to fit in the universe. Personas do not have stories attachted to them. They can have settings, but not a big involved story. Like this:

GOOD
Shui is a Waterbender in the Northern Water Tribe.

BAD
Mizuhime was the daughter of Aang and Katara who was born in the Southern Water Tribr and went on a big long journey where she met Zuko and Mai's son, Ryunohi and they fell in love. They fought to bring peace to the world, but died tragically together in the great Shipper War of 2178.

So. Uhm. Yeah. Setting good. Story bad. I know the line seems a bit blurry, but use your best judgment. I guess just try to keep it simple. Your Persona also can not be related to or in any other way directly involved with the canon characters of the show. Persona. Not character.

Benders are cool, but your Persona doesn't have to be one.
Non-benders can be great too! I mean, how cool are characters like Sokka, Jet and Suki who don't bend but still manage to bring all manner of badassery to the show? Non benders are very much allowed!

Be original! But remember that originality =/= creativity.
If your Persona is a non-bender who works at the Wal*Mart in Ba Sing Se, that's plenty original, but pretty uninteresting Be creative!

There are four elements. Four. That's all.
Water, earth, fire, air heart. Your persona may not bend anything other than these. No woodbenders, carbonbenders, boogerbenders, platicbenders, magnisiumbenders or anything else. Metalbending, bloodbending and lightningbending? Eh. I suppose if your character is a bender of the respective element and choses to specialize, but nothing beyond that. This brings me to my next point.

If you are a bender you get ONE ELEMENT AND ONE ELEMENT ALONE.
I have seen waaaaay too many multi-element bender characters/personas out there and you know what? It's not cool. One element. I don't care if you associate with both earth and water. You get one. ONE. HEAR ME? ONE. Which brings me to my next point.

No, your persona cannot be the Avatar.
Sorry. For the purpose of this conest, *disneypunk10's persona, Namiko is the Avatar. Inside joke which I... might explain if I feel silly enough.

Want to be a Bender but can't decide on an element?
Go by your astrological sun sign! All the signs of the Zodiac are connected to an element. They are:
Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Saggitarius.
Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.
Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
You can use that as a guide if you wish. However, just because you were born into a sign of one element doesn't mean your persona can't bend another. I myself am a Capricorn (Earth Sign) but chose to identify with Water.

Your submission must be a new piece.
This means you must draw a picture specifically for the purpose of the contest. No entering already drawn pictures. Sorry ._____.

Okay, now that THAT unpleasantness is all done with!

Okay so. To enter your piece simply post it here on deviantART and drop me a note with a link to it. I'll post it in here!

The contest will run until Monday, January 14th, 2008 and then will begin voting! The voting will take place for one week here on DeviantART. The winners will be announced Monday, January 21st.

GRAND PRIZE
A hand drawn and coloured picture of your Avatar Persona done by me!! It will be drawn on Paris Bleedproof paper and coloured with copic markers and the original will be mailed to you. Also, a digital peice of art of anything you'd like (within reason of course) also done by me. You will receive the original sketch and ink and a high quality print. ALSO~ A prize drawing request from one of the following artists, *direndria, *neko-yasha =musachan, *messa, or *disneypunk10. Also your art will be featured on my deviantART page and in my journal.

Also, I'm sorry to have to do this, but if I get fewer than ten entries, the contest will be cancelled. Sorry, guys.

Anything I might have missed/made unclear? This is my first contest EVER (and I'm sooooo nervous) so I probably missed something.

EDIT: So I've just got done editing the contest page! WHEW! Goodness there are a lot of entries! I didn't expect the contest to be so popular! If you don't see your entry here, then please resend it in a note, not a comment. Comments get lost way too easily.

Just a quick note, guys. Some of your "personas" are bordering waaaaaay too much on "characters". If your "persona" has a history and a family and all the jazz then they're too close to character. Your persona description should only be a few sentences. If you're writing paragraphs about history and family and such then I'm going to have to ask that you remove those portions at least until the contest is over. Thanks!

I've also extended the due date of the contest, seeing as it's so popular. The new deadline is 11:59 CST January 14th 2008.
